Nolan Carroll signs with Philadelphia Eagles

Though it pales in comparison to their other move from Thursday morning -- a trade for Saints running back Darren Sproles -- the Eagles also managed to nab some needed help at the cornerback position. Philadelphia signed ex-Dolphin Nolan Carroll to a deal, the team confirmed.

Carroll started 12 games for the Dolphins last season and finished the year with a career-high three interceptions. He has been a solid but unspectacular player in Miami since entering the league in 2010, though he reportedly had no shortage of suitors as a free agent -- Pittsburgh and San Francisco had been linked to him, in addition to the Eagles and his former squad in Miami.

The 27-year-old Carroll will compete in Philadelphia with projected starters Bradley Fletcher and Cary Williams, with 2012 draft pick Brandon Boykin also in the mix. He may have been able to find a role more set in stone elsewhere, so from that perspective alone this appears to be a nice pickup by the Eagles.

Carroll does bring nice size to the position: 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds. With Fletcher and Williams, this signing gives the Eagles three cornerbacks standing 6-0 or taller.
