Redskins' new offense, RGIII will not rely heavily on read-option

One of the priorities of new Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden will be to make sure star quarterback Robert Griffin III stays healthy and returns to the level of play he was at during his rookie season.
Part of the reason that Griffin was having issues staying healthy was the Redskins' dedication to the read-option and Griffin running all over the field, but Gruden told Sports Talk 570′s Andy Pollin that the Redskins plan on limiting the amount of carries for Griffin in 2014.
“We’ll have sprinkles here and there,” Gruden said, via the Washington Post. “It’s not going to be a major part. I want to make sure that we have other things that we can do besides the read option, because it takes a toll. You have to practice it a lot to be very good at it. It kind of takes away from the defense’s ability a little bit, it takes away from other plays that you need to work on, your protection schemes, your running game, all that stuff. It just takes away from that.
“So we want to make sure that we work on the core running game that we have, the core drop-back passes we have. And then once we get going, we get those implemented, maybe sprinkle in some read option.”
With the addition of receiver DeSean Jackson this offseason, the Redskins offense will certainly have a more dynamic passing attack, so it would only make sense for the team not to rely as heavily on the run and Griffin's legs to move the chains.
