Will Kansas City Chiefs extend Alex Smith? Reports conflict

Fourteen months ago, the San Francisco 49ers traded QB Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs following the emergence of Colin Kaepernick while Smith was out with a concussion. At the time, many wondered if Smith had anything left in the tank and how much use he could be to the Chiefs, who were then in rebuilding mode.

Well, the 2013 season showed that Smith has a lot left in that tank. Under first-year head coach Andy Reid, Smith led the team to a 9-0 start in the regular season, a playoff appearance and finished the campaign with career-highs in yardage (3,313) and touchdowns (23), while tossing just seven interceptions.

However, with Smith entering his 10th year in the league, it's time for the Chiefs to decide whether or not they want to sign him to a new contract for the long haul or look to other options for the future.

On Tuesday morning, Reid joined the crew of NFL AM, and he seemed pretty confident that they'll get something done with Smith to keep him around past this season.

"I've always believed that if there's open communication, then normally good things happen." Reid told the NFL Network. "So, I'm sure something will get done. I can't put a time frame on that, but I'm sure something will get done."

But are the lines of communication really open? The Kansas City Star suggests otherwise.
