Kevin Burnett, a nine-year veteran linebacker, was cut by the Raiders on Thursday after failing to receive medical clearance to participate in training camp after injuring his ankle during OTAs, reports Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle.

The move will save Oakland $3.375 million in cap space, according to Brian McIntyre.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen said in June that he "absolutely" expected the 31-year-old Burnett to compete for a starting job after he started all 16 games for them last season.

A second-round pick of the Cowboys out of Tennessee in 2005, the 6-foot-3, 237-pound Burnett has 20 sacks, five interceptions (three returned for touchdowns) and eight forced fumbles in four seasons in Dallas, two with the Chargers, two with the Dolphins and one in Oakland.
