Report: Packers to retire Brett Favre's jersey, induct him into team Hall of Fame

ESPN.com's Rob Demovsky reported Sunday night that Favre and the Packers will make a joint announcement Monday. They will officially induct him into the team's Hall of Fame next summer, according to the report. 

Favre will not appear at the event but will speak by telephone, Demovsky reported. The announcement will also feature appearances from Packers Hall of Fame Inc. president Perry Kidder, Packers president Mark Murphy and former Packers president Bob Harlan, who is a member of the Packers Hall of Fame executive committee.

The announcement will come nearly six years to the day that Favre's relationship with his former team reached a low point. Green Bay traded him to the New York Jets on Aug. 7, 2008, after he abruptly decided to make a comeback from his first "retirement." He went on to play in 2009-10 for the division-rival Minnesota Vikings.

Some lingering bad feelings were a reason Murphy said last month that a jersey-retiring ceremony likely wouldn't happen in 2014. He said Favre was worried about being booed, something Favre subsequently denied.

“That is an issue. He doesn’t want it, and neither do we,” Murphy said, according to ESPN Wisconsin. “He wouldn’t want to come back and get booed. You can’t control 80,750 people … [but] I really think as time goes on, every year that passes, it’s less likely that he would get booed, but that is an issue.”

Meanwhile, Packers fans are already reportedly preparing for another likely Hall-of-Fame enshrinement. The CantonRep reported Sunday that Packers fans are already scouting out and booking hotels for a potential Favre induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016.
