Report: 49ers' Ray McDonald arrested on domestic violence charges
UPDATE: According to Trujillo, McDonald has been bailed out of jail. The 49ers have released a statement on the incident:
EARLIER: San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald was arrested Sunday on felony domestic violence charges, reports NBC Bay Area news reporter Damian Trujillo. According to Trujillo, McDonald's victim is pregnant.
The charges come three days after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell released a letter that promised to ramp up the league's domestic violence policy in the wake of a controversial two-game suspension handed down by Goodell to Baltimore Ravens' running back Ray Rice:
Goodell's letter states that a first offense for "violations of the Personal Conduct Policy regarding assault, battery, domestic violence or sexual assault that involve physical force" will be punishable with a six-game suspension; a second offense will bring a lifetime ban.
McDonald was selected in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the 49ers. In seven seasons with San Francisco, he has recorded 16.5 sacks and 171 tackles.
