Indianapolis Colts linebacker Cam Johnson left Sunday night's game against the Denver Broncos with an elbow injury and will not return, the team said. ESPN.com's Mike Wells reported Johnson suffered an elbow strain.

Johnson's injury added to the Colts' lack of depth on the front seven against the offense led by Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. They were already playing without Robert Mathis, last season's NFL sacks leader, who is serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing substance policy.

Bjoern Werner replaced Mathis at linebacker, but Indianapolis was also looking for help from Johnson and fellow linebackers Cory Redding, Erik Walden, and D'Qwell Jackson.
