Report: Jets’ Geno Smith missed team meetings before game vs. Chargers
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith and some teammates missed scheduled team meetings Saturday night after going to a movie, reports the New York Daily News.
According to the report, it is the first time Smith has missed a meeting and characterized the situation as an “honest mistake” after Smith "got the times confused.” Smith arrived 5-10 minutes after the meeting was completed.
It was a rough week for Smith, who was also fined $12,000 for shouting an expletive at a fan following a Week 4 home loss to the Detroit Lions.
Smith started the game against San Diego Chargers and went 4-for-12 for 27 yards with an interception in the 31-0 loss. He was replaced in the second half by backup Michael Vick, who fared no better, going 8 for 19 for 47 yards.
“It was definitely a pathetic showing on my part,” Smith said. “I didn’t help out at any point of the game…. So what I’m going to do is look myself in the mirror.”
Smith will return to his starting position when the team plays the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The Jets have lost four in a row since their Week 1 victory over the Oakland Raiders.
Smith is completing 58 percent of his pass for 949 yards with four touchdowns and six interceptions for New York this season. His quarterback rating of 69.3 is 32nd among 33 qualify quarterbacks. Only injured Minnesota Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel has a worse quarterback rating.
