Whisenhunt: Titans would use some spread if team drafts Mariota
Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said the team would implement elements of the spread offense Tennessee drafts Marcus Mariota with the No. 2 pick, according to The Tennessean.
Mariota played a spread offense at Oregon, prompting concern from some that he will struggle to adjust to the NFL. But Whisenhunt said the Titans would adjust their offensive strategy to better suit Mariota.
"Sure we would," Whisenhunt said, according to the report. "I think that is a part of it. I think that is what we try to do with a lot of things. I think with a young quarterback, obviously one of the things you have to do is you have to push him, you have to test him, challenge him. That is what these guys thrive on.
"But you also have to try to do some things they have done well. Our no-huddle offense that we run, some of the things I have seen Marcus (Mariota) do in his offense translate to that. There are certainly some things whether we get either one of these two young men that you will do to make that transition easier."
The quarterbacks currently on Tennessee's roster are Zach Mettenberger, Charlie Whitehurst and Alex Tanney.
