Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson suffered a “severe hand injury” during a fireworks accident on July 4, his agents confirmed to the Tampa Tribune.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network described the injury as “very serious” and said Wilson's career is in jeopardy. The Lincoln Times-News, the newspaper in Wilson’s hometown, citing sources close to his family, reported that Wilson had lost two fingers.

The team issued a statement saying it was aware of the situation.

“We are aware that C.J. was involved in an accident that occurred over the July 4th holiday,” it read. “It is our understanding that the injury occurred to one of his hands and our primary concern at this moment is for his long-term health. We have been in contact with C.J. and are continuing to monitor the situation.”

Wilson, 25, played in two games for the Bucs last season and recorded four tackles. He played two games for the Chicago Bears in 2013 after being signed as an undrafted free agent from North Carolina State.

Wilson, not to be confused with Oakland Raiders defensive end C.J. Wilson, is the second NFL player to injure his hand with fireworks this July 4. New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul reportedly suffered injuries to both hands in an accident in Florida on Saturday.
