Geno Smith undergoes jaw surgery after Jets locker room punch
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith underwent surgery on his broken jaw on Thursday, the team confirmed.
ESPN's Josina Anderson reported earlier Thursday that Smith had opted to have the surgery after getting a second opinion from another doctor.
Smith suffered a broken jaw in a locker room fight on Tuesday when linebackerIK Enemkpali punched him in the face. The argument was reportedly over a $600 debt.
Enemkpali was released by the Jets after the incident and was claimed by the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday.
Smith is expected to miss the first six to 10 weeks of the season. Ryan Fitzpatrick is slated to start at quarterback in Smith's place, but the team has also contacted former NFL quarterback Rex Grossman.
