Saints fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan after three seasons
The New Orleans Saints have fired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, the team announced Monday. Senior defensive assistant Dennis Allen has been promoted to replace him.
Fox Sports’ Alex Marvez reported Monday morning that Ryan would be fired but head coach Sean Payton told reporters that Ryan was “absolutely” still a member of his staff.
The Saints defense is allowing a league-worst 31.5 points per game this season and a league-high 6.7 yards per play. New Orleans allowed 47 points against the Redskins on Sunday, including a career-high four touchdown passes from quarterback Kirk Cousins.
New Orleans allowed the fourth-most points in the NFL last season after surrendering the fourth-fewest in Ryan’s first year as defensive coordinator.
The Saints have a bye this week before they play the Texans on Nov. 29.
