Former Packers DB Mike C. McCoy dies at 62

Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Mike C. McCoy has died.

Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Mike C. McCoy has died, the team announced Monday.

McCoy was 62. He died at the assisted living facility he moved to after dementia made it untenable for him to live at home. McCoy was diagnosed with dementia in his 50s. 

A third-round pick in 1976, McCoy played eight seasons with the Packers. He appeared in 110 games, recording 13 interceptions and five fumble recoveries.

Last year, McCoy told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he dealt with significant cognitive problems as part of his dementia.

“Sometimes I can’t remember what I had for breakfast or dinner, but I can remember Packers stuff from 40 years ago,” McCoy told the Journal Sentinel last September. “The brain is sure weird. I’m functional, but I can’t drive. I’ve had like three seizures over the last couple years and so I gave up my car ... It’s really hard to give up your car keys, your independence ... Some players kept it inside and committed suicide. You need your family and friends around you and you have to talk them ... It’s not easy.”
