The Cleveland Browns have released quarterback Johnny Manziel, the team announced Friday.

Manziel, 23, was a volatile figure during his time in Cleveland, coming to the franchise as arguably the most popular player in the 2014 NFL draft, but leaving with speculation about his ability to control his life on and off the field.

While he had already lost favor with the Browns after a number of incidents during his tenure, a recent investigation into Manziel’s alleged assault of his ex-girlfriend led new head coach Hue Jackson to publicly condemn his player’s actions.

Manziel’s off-field troubles date back to his time at Texas A&M, where he was the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner as a sophomore.

A history of controversies surrounding Johnny Manziel

On the field, Manziel struggled to win games when handed the reins of the offense. He made six starts last season in place of an injured Josh McCown, finishing with a 2–4 record. He was named the starter for the rest of the season on Nov. 17, but was dropped to third string after a video surfaced of him partying during a bye week.

Browns spokesman denies that team lied to protect Johnny Manziel

Manziel thanked the Browns after his release through a statement from his publicist.

In 15 career NFL games, Manziel has completed 57% of his passes with 1,675 yards, seven touchdowns, seven interceptions and seven fumbles.
