Former NFL running back Ricky Williams thinks he was drug tested more than 500 times during his NFL career.
In the new SI Films documentary Ricky Williams Takes The High Road, which premieres Wednesday on SI.com, Williams speaks about his experiences with drug testing as an NFL player. Williams believes he might have “the record” for number of tests.
Williams was suspended multiple times for marijuana use during his NFL career. He retired before the 2004 season after failing a drug test for the third time. He was suspended for all of 2006 after a fourth failed test. In 2007, Williams reportedly failed another drug test, leading to a schedule multiple tests per week as he applied for reinstatement.
Williams played in every regular season game from 2008–2011 with no incident.
The running back retired after 2011 season having run for more than 10,000 yards. Williams is the Dolphins’ all-time leader in rushing yards.
