The Giants have released kicker Josh Brown, the team announced on Tuesday.

“We believed we did the right thing at every juncture of our relationship with Josh,” team president John Mara said in statement. “Our beliefs, our judgments and our decisions were misguided. We accept that responsibility.”

Brown was held out of Sunday’s game after he admitted to being abusive toward his ex-wife, Molly, in documents released Wednesday to the media. The kicker was suspended for the first game of this season for violating a protective order against his wife in 2015.

He was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list on Friday.

On Tuesday, Brown said that he had “never struck his wife, and never would.” He followed the news of his release with an additional statement, saying he’d reveal the “pain” he has gone through in the coming days.

The team said Thursday that it was also not aware of the documents until their release last Wednesday, according to the New York Daily News. The Giants signed Robbie Gould to replace Brown ahead of Sunday’s game.
