Tannehill entered in the third quarter of last Sunday’s 16-0 loss at Denver, replacing the ineffective Marcus Mariota. The one-time Dolphins quarterback completed 13 of 16 passes for 144 yards but was also sacked four times. He was intercepted in the red zone as the Titans (2-4) committed three turnovers overall.
The Titans are 28th in the league in scoring at 16.3 points per game, but regardless of whether Mariota or Tannehill is under center, keeping the quarterback upright has been a season-long problem. Tennessee has allowed an NFL-worst 29 sacks, more than double the league average of 14.
Tannehill, the eighth overall pick in the 2012 draft, started 88 games for Miami over six seasons before becoming expendable following the acquisition of 2018 No. 1 overall pick Josh Rosen from Arizona. Tannehill has a 3-1 lifetime record against the Chargers but has not faced them since a 31-24 win in San Diego in 2016.
Tennessee has totaled 55 points in five games since opening the season with a 43-13 victory at Cleveland. Mike Vrabel’s team has lost both its home games despite holding Indianapolis and Buffalo to a combined 33 points in those defeats. The Titans have also failed to reach 300 yards in each of their last four games at home.
The Chargers (2-4) look to avoid a third straight loss and fifth in six games. After giving the Broncos their first win in Week 5, things went from bad to worse in losing to third-string quarterback Devlin Hodges and the Steelers 24-17 last Sunday night.
Slow starts were the common theme in both losses as the Chargers were outscored 38-0 in the first half of their last two games. The offense showed up late as Philip Rivers twice connected with Hunter Henry on touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, part of a career day for Henry as he finished with eight receptions for 100 yards.
Rivers recorded his fourth 300-yard game of the season, finishing with 320, but he also threw two interceptions for the second straight game. The 37-year-old quarterback has fared well against the Titans over his career, posting a 7-1 record while throwing for 2,081 yards and 15 TDs with only four interceptions.
