Foles, who signed a 4-year, $88 million deal with the Jaguars (4-5) in March that included $45 million guaranteed, has not played since suffering a broken clavicle 11 plays into Jacksonville's season-opening loss to Kansas City. Foles had been practicing with the team for the past three weeks, and with the Jaguars coming off their bye, Marrone felt the timing was right to make Foles the starter once again.
Despite his worst performance of the season coming in Jacksonville's 26-3 loss vs. Texans before the bye week, rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew should be lauded for keeping the Jaguars in wild-card contention. The unheralded sixth-round pick from Washington State captivated a nation with his surprising poise and unique facial hair, but he also produced results. Minshew went 4-4 as a starter and threw for 2,285 yards and 13 touchdown passes with just four interceptions.
Two of those picks came against the Texans, and he also lost a pair of fumbles in the fourth quarter for an unsuccessful rally. Leonard Fournette will try to help ease Foles back into the offense. The third-year running back has 831 yards and is well on his way to a second 1,000-yard season.
Fournette has also evolved into a competent pass-catching threat out of the backfield, already setting a career-high with 40 receptions. He needs eight receiving yards to better his previous personal best of 302 set as a rookie in 2017.
As the Jaguars welcome back their starting quarterback, the Colts (5-4) are also hoping theirs will be under center once more. Jacoby Brissett, who was knocked out early in their Week 9 loss at Pittsburgh with a sprained left MCL, could not recover in time for Sunday's game against Miami. His absence loomed large as Indianapolis lost 16-12 at home to the one-win Dolphins, as backup Brian Hoyer threw three interceptions in his first start since 2017. The defeat dropped the Colts one game behind the Texans in the AFC South in which the entire division is separated by two games from top to bottom.
Sunday's loss also marked the second straight game where a missed kick by Adam Vinatieri directly contributed to a loss. Vinatieri, who badly pulled a potential game-winning 43-yard field goal at Pittsburgh, missed a crucial fourth-quarter extra point that would have given Indianapolis a 13-10 lead.
Miami reclaimed the lead on the ensuing possession on a 48-yard field goal by Jason Sanders, who added another one with 3:31 to play that forced Indianapolis to drive for a game-winning touchdown. Hoyer directed the Colts as far as the Dolphins' eight-yard line, but a 4th-and-10 pass to Eric Ebron was short of a first down.
Jacksonville has won five of the last seven games between the teams and salvaged a split of last season's series with a 6-0 victory when Josh Lambo kicked field goals of 30 and 37 yards.
