The Saints (7-2) had their first all-around awful performance of the season, losing 26-9 at home to an Atlanta Falcons team that came to the New Orleans with just one victory. Drew Brees completed 32 of 45 passes for 287 yards, but he failed to throw a touchdown pass as New Orleans failed to record a touchdown and settled for two field goals on five trips to the red zone.
The result dropped the Saints to third place in the NFC, one game behind San Francisco and one-half game behind Green Bay. They still have a 1 ½-game lead over Carolina in the South, but are out to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time since an 0-2 start in 2017.
Brees has enjoyed plenty of success against Tampa Bay in his career, going 17-10 while throwing for 7,638 yards and 52 touchdowns. Both totals rank as the second most in his storied career against any one opponent. Brees missed New Orleans’ 31-24 victory over Tampa Bay in Week 5 due to thumb surgery, but backup Teddy Bridgewater rolled up 314 yards and four touchdowns.
Regardless of who is throwing the ball for the Saints, Michael Thomas has been catching them at a staggering rate. Thomas became the fastest player in NFL history to 400 receptions in last week’s loss, doing so in just 56 games — eight faster than Jarvis Landry.
Thomas leads the NFL with 86 receptions for 1,027 yards after a season-best 13 receptions and 152 yards. He has the chance to challenge Marvin Harrison’s single-season record of 143 catches established in 2002 with the Indianapolis Colts, and Thomas is also 186 yards shy of 5,000. That total is not out of reach considering he had a season-high 182 yards on 11 grabs in the Week 5 win and has 58 catches for 717 yards in six career matchups against the Buccaneers.
Tampa Bay (3-6) has already been relegated to spoiler, though Bruce Arians’ club snapped a four-game losing streak last Sunday with a 30-27 victory over Arizona. Jameis Winston directed a go-ahead, 6-play, 92-yard drive that was capped by Peyton Barber’s 1-yard touchdown run with 1:43 to play.
Winston had his fourth straight game with at least 300 yards, finishing with 358 while throwing for a touchdown and two interceptions. In the final year of his contract after being drafted No. 1 overall in 2015, Winston has been uneven the entire season, throwing for 2,765 yards and 17 TDs, but also a league-high 14 interceptions.
He did not throw a pick in the Week 5 loss to the Saints, finishing with 204 yards and a pair of scores. Winston is 3-5 lifetime vs. New Orleans and has only nine TD tosses in those contests.
