The new Indianapolis coach was an assistant with the Chargers when the former NFL quarterback was there.

Philip Rivers played most of his career with the Chargers before retiring with the Colts and now he finds himself as a high school football coach. With the news that former longtime San Diego coach Shane Steichen is going to be the new head coach in Indianapolis, Rivers addressed the possibility of returning to the pros.

“I’m staying right where I am,” he told Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times

He added that he’s “super happy” for Steichen, who held several assistant roles with the Chargers since 2011, including quarterbacks coach while Rivers was still under center. Rivers joined the Colts in 2020, the same year Steichen was promoted to offensive coordinator full-time.

Steichen took the Eagles OC job in 2021 and is now poised to take his first NFL head coaching job, but Rivers is done with the league as a player. He retired in January 2021 and is the current coach for St. Michael Catholic High football team in Fairhope, Ala.
