Jaguars Announce Contract Extension for Quarterback CJ Beathard
The Jaguars have signed CJ Beathard to a contract extension, the team announced Friday, keeping the veteran quarterback in Jacksonville ahead of the upcoming free agency period.
The franchise did not disclose the terms of the extension but NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that the deal will be for two years.
Beathard, a 2017 third-round pick out of Iowa, has spent the last two seasons with the Jags, serving as the backup to former No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence. He stands to continue in that role in 2023 after appearing in six games for Jacksonville across the previous two years.
Prior to his time in Duval County, Beathard spent four years with the 49ers, where he saw the bulk of his playing time in the NFL. Since 2017, he’s played in 25 career games and made 12 starts, throwing for 3,537 yards and 18 touchdowns.
With Beathard under contract, the Jaguars will get the chance to go into the 2023 season with the same quarterback room that led them to the playoffs this past year. After posting a 9–8 record in the regular season, Jacksonville eked past the Chargers in the wild-card round before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Chiefs in the AFC divisional round.
