Andy Reid Shares Why He’s ‘So Happy’ for Eric Bieniemy

The former Chiefs offensive coordinator just accepted the same role for the Commanders.

A couple weeks after Eric Bieniemy left the Chiefs to take the Commanders offensive coordinator role, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid shared his best wishes to his former assistant.

Bieniemy spent five seasons as the Chiefs’ OC, helping lead the team to three Super Bowl appearances and two titles, including a championship victory this past season.

“I’m so happy for EB to have a chance to put his name on an offense,” Reid said, via Pro Football Talk. “This is his now. He’s working for Ron Rivera, who’s a dear friend, and more of a defensive head coach than offensive head coach, so this allows EB to do his thing, and I’m happy for him. I’m wishing him luck with that. I’m also wishing him luck going forward. We were trying to get him to become a head coach, it didn’t work out, but it’s not over yet. I think he’s going to do a heck of a job.”

Bieniemy previously admitted that he was interviewed for a dozen head coaching positions over the last five years, but was never offered any of the roles. Despite his success in Kansas City while working with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, he still hasn’t been promoted to a top role in the league.

This year, out of the five open head coaching roles at the beginning of the offseason, Bieniemy was only interviewed by the Colts, who ended up hiring Eagles OC Shane Steichen on Tuesday. 

As Reid said, the Chiefs coach believes if Bieniemy can bring a successful offense to Washington, then the OC should be set to earn a head coaching job next season.
