The 49ers appear to be making an addition to their crowded quarterback room.

San Francisco has agreed to terms with quarterback Sam Darnold on a one-year contract, according to a Monday afternoon report from ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Darnold will reportedly join a 49ers roster that includes quarterbacks Trey Lance and Brock Purdy. Lance and Purdy are 22 and 23, respectively, having been drafted in the first and seventh rounds in 2021 and ’22.

By contrast, Darnold brings relative veteran savvy to San Francisco at the age of 25.

Drafted No. 3 by the Jets in 2018 out of USC, Darnold spent a mostly subpar three seasons with New York, throwing 45 touchdowns against 39 interceptions from ’18 to ’20.

In April 2021, the Jets dealt him to the Panthers for three draft picks. He continued to struggle, throwing 16 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 2021 and ’22. His 55 interceptions rank 18th among active quarterbacks.
