In a surprising move, Chargers safety Nasir Adderley announced his retirement at just 25 years old on Thursday.

“After a period of self reflection, I have decided it’s time for me to walk away from the game of football,” he wrote on Instagram. “Over the past couple of years I have denied this realization, but I’m finally going to put myself first for once. My health is above anything and everyone around me knows that.”

It’s unclear if Adderley is speaking about any specific health concern. He tallied 62 tackles and two interceptions in his 16 games played this past season. He started in 15 of those games.

“I believe I have yet to scratch the surface of the player I could be, but if it’s at the expense of my peace of mind then it’s no longer for me,” he continued. “Through it all I can proudly say I have given this game my all through everything I have endured. It’s been a joy to create such amazing relationships and words can’t express how much love & gratitude I have for you all.”

Adderley calls it a career after just four seasons and 50 games played.
