Eagles Sign Veteran Quarterback Marcus Mariota, per Report
After a breakout season for Jalen Hurts in 2022, the Eagles are signing an experienced backup with 74 career starts under his belt as they seek to make another run at a Super Bowl in the coming year.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Philadelphia has signed former Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota, the No. 2 pick in the 2015 NFL draft and four-year Titans starter.
Mariota’s deal is for one year, worth $5 million with an additional $3 million in incentives, according to the report.
After spending two seasons as Derek Carr’s backup with the Raiders in 2020 to ’21, Mariota signed with the Falcons for the ’22 season, starting 13 games. He threw for 2,219 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions and added 438 rushing yards and four touchdowns. After leading the team to a 5–8 record, he was benched for rookie Desmond Ridder.
Mariota, entering his ninth year, will play behind Hurts, who emerged as an MVP candidate in ’22, leading Philadelphia to a 14–1 record in 15 starts, and guiding the team to an appearance in Super Bowl LVII, where they fell to the Chiefs. Hurts put together an impressive outing in that game, throwing for 304 yards and a touchdown and adding 70 yards and three scores on the ground.
