Patriots Face Longest Championship Odds of Bill Belichick Era
Over the last 23 years, the Bill Belichick-led Patriots have forged a legacy built on their six Super Bowl titles, and consistent regular season and postseason success. But, for the first time in the illustrious head coach’s tenure, New England stands to enter an upcoming season firmly facing stark odds at another Lombardi Trophy in the eyes of oddsmakers.
With the NFL offseason in full swing, the Patriots, like many teams, have devoted time to revamping their roster in hopes of making it back to the Super Bowl. However, according to the latest from Caesars Sportsbook, the Pats are not considered to be anywhere near a contender in 2023, with the club facing the longest preseason championship odds of the Belichick era at 70–1, per ESPN.
To date, New England’s ’23 title odds are the lowest the club has seen since Belichick took over in 2000 since it was tabbed with 70–1 odds ahead of its first Super Bowl win in ’01, according to SportsOddsHistory.com. The latest odds also mark the longest under owner Robert Kraft, who bought the team in 1994. New England faced 100-1 odds in the ’93 preseason, and went on to finish that year 10–6 before losing in the wild card round.
While the deck appears to be stacked against them now, the Patriots will, of course, still have the opportunity to determine their own destiny once they take the field for Belichick’s 24th season. But, if the recent track record is any indication, the once-perennial playoff contender will likely again face tempered expectations come Week 1.
Since Belichick’s partnership with the legendary Tom Brady ended in 2020, the Patriots have gone 25–25 in the regular season, including an 8–9 mark last season. In that span, New England has missed the playoffs twice, with their only appearance in ’21 ending in the wild card round.
