Browns’ Newsome Responds to Report Suggesting He Wants to be Traded
Cornerback Greg Newsome has provided the Browns with a pair of solid seasons since Cleveland took him 26th overall in the 2021 draft.
However, the Browns secondary has become more crowded recently, particularly with the offseason addition of safety Juan Thornhill. This has invited trade speculation around Newsome—speculation he shut down in a memorable tweet Tuesday morning.
Citing a source, Brad Stainbrook of 247Sports reported Tuesday morning that Newsome wanted a trade. Responding to Stainbrook’s report, Newsome wrote, “Ok y’all sit back a minute and lets think about this together. I just launched a softball game in Cleveland.”
Newsome was referencing a charity softball game in Eastlake, Ohio formerly hosted by wide receiver Jarvis Landry, which Newsome will oversee this summer.
“I’ll just leave it there,” he added, along with several laughing emojis.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Newsome’s agent Drew Rosenhaus and the team met Tuesday morning in Cleveland. Schefter added that Newsome plans to be in attendance Monday when the Browns begin their offseason program.
“Greg is happy to be with the Browns,” Rosenhaus reportedly told Schefter. “Everything was very positive and Greg is happy with his role and playing for new (defensive coordinator) Jim Schwartz.”
