Buccaneers’ Winfield Is ‘Sure’ Team Is Still Reaching Out to Tom Brady
The Buccaneers are entering the 2023 season in a state of transition, as they must deal with the departure of Tom Brady. While Tampa Bay signed Baker Mayfield to help fill the void at quarterback, one Buccaneer believes the team hasn’t given up on Brady just yet.
As a guest on The Richard Sherman Podcast, defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr. said he thinks the front office is still hoping Brady wants to come out of retirement.
“I’m sure we’re still reaching out to him trying to see if he’s trying to come back to the team,” Winfield said. “Hey, it could happen. Anything’s possible.”
Since Brady has come out of retirement before, many believe he has left the door open for him to do it again. After Brady retired for a few months last year, before coming back to the league, Winfield admits he didn’t expect the quarterback to reverse course like that.
“When he first said he retired, I really thought that he was done,” Winfield said. “He surprised me when he came back.”
In 2022, Brady played in 17 games and still put up good numbers as a 45-year-old, with 4,694 yards and 25 touchdowns. However, the veteran has committed to retirement despite all the questions surrounding its legitimacy.
For now, it seems like Mayfield and Kyle Trask will battle for the starting job as Tampa Bay goes for a third straight NFC South division title.
