Patrick Mahomes and (most of) the rest of the Chiefs are back at training camp, preparing to defend their Super Bowl-winning campaign.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports asked the star quarterback Kansas City’s status as an NFL dynasty and whether or not Mahomes would already categorize the Chiefs as one. Not quite ready to make such a bold declaration about his team, Mahomes indicated that he believes the franchise needs to win its third Super Bowl before dynasty conversations hold any weight.

“I think we’re the beginning of one. I think in dynasties, I always say you gotta win three,” said Mahomes. “Our job is to do whatever we can to win as many as we can and not have any regrets when we step off the field. I think if we can keep the mentality that we have that we can look back at the end of our career, and then we can decide whether we’re a dynasty or not.”

Kansas City has won two of the league’s last four Super Bowls and has played in the conference championship in the past five seasons. While their dominance has been impossible to deny, Mahomes is pumping the brakes a bit when it comes to dynasty talk.

If they’re successful in their title defense and add another championship in 2023, the 27-year-old may be ready to consider the team a dynasty—though Mahomes indicated he’d prefer to wait to make that claim until his NFL career is all said and done.
