Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is largely expected to be the next player to receive a gargantuan contract extension following the Chargers’ deal with Justin Herbert, which was agreed upon on Tuesday.

The five-year, $262.5 million deal Herbert penned in Los Angeles carries the highest average annual value of any contract in NFL history, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter indicated that record will almost certainly be broken when Burrow re-signs with Cincinnati.

Schefter said Wednesday that Burrow’s contract is expected to be signed at some point during the summer, and it will be “well north” of the deal Herbert signed with the Chargers.

“I think by the time the season starts, the Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow will figure out a way to bridge their differences and they will produce what then will be the highest paying annual average salary contract in NFL history,” said Schefter. “… I can promise you, the numbers [on Burrow’s contract] are going to be well north of the numbers that came in on Justin Herbert.”

Herbert’s new deal will see him pocket an average annual value of $52.5 million, a figure Schefter suggests Burrow will exceed whenever he and the Bengals are able to reach an agreement.

Burrow was asked about his own contract situation on Wednesday, to which he indicated he’s in no hurry to sign a new deal.

“It gets done when it gets done,” said Burrow, via NFL.com. “We’ll see.”
