Cowboys’ Zack Martin Has Been Fined At Least $500k for Holdout, per Report
Zack Martin remains away from the Cowboys training camp, as the veteran is looking for a new contract, and so far he has missed 10 practices with the team. Therefore, Dallas has made sure to fine the offensive guard for every practice that he misses.
According to Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are fining Martin $50,000 a day for his absence, which means so far the veteran has amassed $500,000 worth of fines this summer. Additionally, there have not been any renewed discussions between the Cowboys and Martin since the guard chose to hold out, Watkins reports.
Martin has two years left on his contract, and he is looking to make around $20 million on average, which is around the highest salaries in the league at his position.
While the long-time Cowboys guard wants a new deal, there has not been any evidence that Dallas will give it to him. Owner Jerry Jones explained last week that the team has to consider other players’ future deals when discussing contract restructures.
“It’s not about precedent, it’s about facts,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “We need the money to pay (Micah) Parsons. We need the money to pay the players that we got to pay in the future. That’s a fact.”
Martin has been with Dallas since the team drafted him in 2014, and he has been one of the best guards in the league. In nine NFL seasons, Martin has made eight Pro Bowls and has been a first-team All Pro six times and second-team All Pro twice.
