Lamar Jackson Reveals Unusual Source for Ravens Plays He Pitches to Coaches

Baltimore’s former MVP apparently finds inspiration from all over.

As Lamar Jackson prepares for his sixth NFL season, he and the Ravens will be doing so while adjusting to a new offensive coordinator. The team hired Todd Monken to replace Greg Roman, who had held the role for the previous four years. Following Tuesday’s practice, Jackson spoke about how the offense is coming along—and revealed that he’s been pitching plays to the new coaching staff from a highly unusual source.

“I was just on social media, and I saw a couple of routes, and I sent it to [quarterbacks] coach Tee [Martin], and he was like, ‘I’m going to relay the message to coach [Todd] Monken,’” Jackson said, per ESPN’s Jamison Hensley. “Coach Monken liked the play, so he put it in practice. We didn’t show it today, but I feel like it will be good for us.”

Monken spent the previous three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Georgia, where the Bulldogs ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring in each of the past two years, winning back-to-back national championships. Monken had previous stints as an assistant for the Buccaneers and Browns from 2016 to ’19.

Clearly, Monken is open to hearing ideas from his quarterback—regardless of where the source material comes from—and Jackson also has the support of his head coach in that regard.

“He’s a guy [who] thinks about football a lot—it’s on his mind—and I think he always had his ideas,” said John Harbaugh. “He had a couple good ones; I can tell you that.”
