Patriots Add Former Third Round Quarterback Matt Corral After Cutting Two, per Report
The Patriots’ quarterback room saga continues after the team claimed former Panthers quarterback Matt Corral on Thursday, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
This move comes a day after the Patriots re-signed backup quarterbacks Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham to their practice squad after the team waived them both on Tuesday. It was unclear who would step up to become starter Mac Jones’s backup, but now it sounds like that role may be filled by Corral.
Corral has yet to play in a regular season NFL game after he missed his entire rookie season last year due to suffering a torn Lisfranc ligament in his left foot in a preseason game, coincidentally against the Patriots.
The Patriots actually sent the Panthers the third round pick in the 2022 draft that Carolina used to pick up Corral. New England drafted Zappe and Marte Mapu with the picks they received in return, and now they also have Corral.
