Chiefs’ Chris Jones Questions How He’s Letting Teammates Down With Holdout
The reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs are slated to start their season Thursday night, but it’s looking more and more likely they’ll be short one of their best players amid their contract holdout.
Defensive tackle Chris Jones addressed being away from the team while at a charity event Wednesday and appeared to take exception when asked by a reporter if he feels like he’s letting his teammates down.
“How? How have I let them down?” Jones asked the reporter. “It’s just like when you’re at a job and you ask for an extension, right? You ask for a raise, right? You’re not letting anyone down. Who are you letting down?
“… When you take the personal feelings out of it, you kinda get it. All I’m doing is asking for a raise.”
If anyone deserves a raise, it’s Jones. The two-time Super Bowl champion is coming off his fourth consecutive season in a row where he was selected to the Pro Bowl as the anchor of the Chiefs’ championship defense. He appeared in all 17 games in 2022 and racked up 15.5 sacks, while earning his first First-Team All-Pro selection.
