It was supposed to be a reunion of sorts this weekend. Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy and Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers were a tandem for over a decade with the Packers, winning a Super Bowl together in the process. The two became as close as you could get and have a relationship that persists to this day, so naturally, the Dallas vs. New York matchup in Week 2 was one they had circled.

Unfortunately, the reunion is not going to happen. Rodgers’s season came to a screeching halt in Week 1 when he tore his Achilles on his fourth play with the Jets and it looks like the two will have to wait to face each other on the field again. When asked about Rodgers and the injury, McCarthy had nothing but love for his former quarterback.

“It’s great to compete against people you care about,” McCarthy said Wednesday when asked about Rodgers. “I mean, him and I have been through a lot together. I have a tremendous amount of love for him. This is tough. I know he’s very excited about this chapter of his life and I was looking forward to seeing him this weekend.

“You can see how precious these opportunities are,” he continued. “Every game is such a special opportunity to compete in this league. I think we’re all feeling for him personally right now.”

Kickoff at AT&T Stadium is scheduled for Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS.
