Bill Belichick Could Become Losingest Coach in NFL History This Season

The Patriots began 1–5 this season, which is the worst start of Belichick’s career.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is often regarded as one of the best coaches in NFL history.

However, the 71-year-old could add an unfortunate record to his long resume this season depending how the Patriots finish out the year. If the Patriots lose at least nine more games this season, Belichick will become the losingest coach in NFL history.

After New England’s 21–17 loss to the Raiders on Sunday, Belichick’s squad moved to 1–5, which remains to be the worst start of his coaching career. This moved the six-time Super Bowl champion’s all-time coaching record to 299–157.

The current record for the most regular season losses in NFL history is held by both Dan Reeves (190–165–2) and Jeff Fisher (173–165–1). But, the overall record for the losingest coach including playoff losses is held by Tom Landry, who lost 178 games in his career. Belichick currently has 170 losses including postseason play, meaning he could surpass Landry as well if the Patriots’ tough season continues.

Two of the team’s most recent losses were among the worst of Belichick’s career. The Patriots’ 38–3 loss to the Cowboys in Week 4 ranks as the coach’s worst loss ever, while the team’s 34–0 loss in Week 5 to the Saints checks in as Belichick’s worst at home.
