Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones announced on Instagram that he is stepping away from football.

“I am stepping away from the team to take care of personal family matters,” Jones wrote Tuesday. “Although this was no easy decision, I cannot be the person/player that I need to be for this team as well as tend to my family from afar. This organization has been amazing, showing love and support for myself and my family over the years, and this is no different.”

Following the announcement, Detroit announced that it has released Jones from the team’s 53-man active roster.

Jones is an 11-season veteran, spending time with the Bengals, Lions and Jaguars during his NFL career. The wide receiver previously played for five years in Detroit, and after two years in Jacksonville, he returned to the Lions in the offseason.

Jones enjoyed the best seasons of his career with the Lions, producing 4,331 receiving yards and 36 touchdown catches in Detroit, including a 1,000-yard season in 2017. This season, Jones has played in six games, totaling five catches for 35 yards.
