Bears Fans Went on Emotional Roller Coaster Over Ref’s Mistake When Announcing a Penalty

Cheers from Chicago fans quickly turned to boos after the referee corrected his mistake.

Bears fans went through a rollercoaster of emotions late into the third quarter on Thursday night against the Panthers.

Following a pass interference penalty against DJ Moore, referee Clete Blakeman misspoke while announcing the call and accidentally declared that the flag was thrown against the defense. Fans at Soldier Field erupted into applause, under the guise that Chicago would be advancing the ball forward.

Blakeman quickly corrected himself, however, clarifying that the penalty was against No. 2 on the offense—aka Moore. Bears fans immediately turned their cheers into a chorus of boos, showing just how quickly a crowd can turn on a referee when things aren’t going in their favor.

Fans in Chicago had their hopes dashed in a split second by the official, who did a complete 180 with his call. They quickly and loudly let him know how they felt about his decision.

On the play, Moore was flagged for offensive pass interference, having had set an illegal pick on cornerback Troy Hill, who was covering wide receiver Trent Taylor

The penalty negated a 16-yard reception for Taylor and a first down for the Bears.
