The Minnesota Vikings are gearing up for the offseason, and one of the key decisions facing the organization revolves around the future of Kirk Cousins.

The franchise quarterback is coming off an Achilles injury which ended his season early in 2023 and his contract is due to expire in March, at which point he’d hit free agency.

Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was asked on Wednesday about Cousins’ future in Minnesota, and he weighed in with his thoughts on the situation.

“I think I’ve been pretty consistent with that. … I thought we’d been playing really good football before [Cousins] got injured. It’s the most important position in sports. Ultimately, it comes down to, can you find an agreement that works for both sides? And all of those things. But, as a player, it’s certainly my intention to have him back here,” said Adofo-Mensah, via Alec Lewis of The Athletic.

Cousins and the Vikings agreed to a one-year, $35 million extension last offseason. Prior to his season-ending Achilles injury, he’d thrown for 18 touchdowns and five interceptions in eight games.

As Adofo-Mensah indicated, Cousins’s injury put a damper on what was a promising season in Minnesota, as the team fell short of the playoffs in his absence following a 4-4 start to the year.

Cousins will turn 36 next season, and if he’s back with the Vikings in 2024, it’ll mark his seventh season as the franchise’s starting quarterback.
