Jerod Mayo, the man tasked with guiding the next chapter of New England Patriots football after officially being introduced as the team’s new head coach Wednesday, was always considered to be a favorite of legendary coach Bill Belichick.

An old quote from former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady confirms it.

“If we want something done, we go to Jerod Belichick,” Brady jokingly said in an old interview from back in his playing days.

“Everybody knew Jerod was Bill’s favorite,” former teammate Devin McCourty said of the Brady quote Wednesday, per 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Alex Barth.

Mayo, the No. 10 pick by New England in the 2008 draft, played eight seasons for Belichick before retiring in 2015. After working four years as a business executive at Optum, Mayo joined Belichick’s coaching staff in 2019 as the Patriots’ inside linebackers coach.

He filled that role until being officially promoted to the head-coaching role on Wednesday.

"I'm not trying to be Bill," Mayo said Wednesday during his press conference. “"If you can't tell by now, I'm a little bit different. Even up here."

Maybe not, but based on their history together it’s very likely that whatever Mayo does, Belichick would approve.
