Ron Rivera Says He’s Choosing Between ‘Several Opportunities’ for Potential NFL Return
Ron Rivera was fired after four seasons with the Washington Commanders, but it doesn’t sound like his NFL coaching career is over just yet.
At 62 years old, Rivera said he’s had some NFL coaching offers presented to him, but he hasn’t officially decided what to go forward with. He didn’t offer what the exact roles were, but it’s likely they were assistant coaching positions.
“I have several opportunities right now,” Rivera told ESPN. “I just want to make sure it’s the right one.”
Rivera noted that while the 2023 season might seem like it was a disappointing season to him, it actually helped him moving forward in his career.
“This was probably the greatest learning experience I’ve had in a while this year,” Rivera said. "I mean, a lot of things came to light at certain times this past season that I think going forward will really help me.”
Rivera indicated that taking a defensive coordinator role would relatively easy to step into. He previously held the role with the Chicago Bears from 2004–06, and the Los Angeles Chargers, then in San Diego, from 2008–10.
He also has experience working as a linebackers coach, the position he played in the NFL. He coached in this role for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999–2003, then also with the Chargers in ‘07.
