Mics Caught Kyle Shanahan’s Cocky Five-Word Message to John Lynch Before NFC Title Game
Whether by luck, talent, or pure confidence, the San Francisco 49ers took care of business against the Detroit Lions in the NFC championship game last weekend.
In the thrilling come-from-behind victory, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan helped orchestrate a historic comeback, one tied for the largest ever in NFC title history. And apparently, he knew his team was going to win from the start.
As the players were running onto the field for kickoff, Shanahan told general manager John Lynch, “See you on stage, man.”
Lynch could only chuckle at the audacity of the comment.
But Shanahan’s 49ers did, in fact, end up on that stage, coming back from a 24–7 deficit at halftime to win, 34–31.
Brock Purdy enjoyed an efficient second half in which he led the offense on five straight scoring drives, whittling the Lions’ once-cushy lead down before ultimately taking the lead. The usual suspects for San Francisco, Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel, put up near-100-yard games, respectively.
Shanahan made good on his promise to Lynch as the 49ers celebrated their first NFC title since the 2019 season, setting a new NFL record for most playoff wins in history (38).
The 49ers will play the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas on Feb. 11.
