Packers to Hire Boston College HC Jeff Hafley as Defensive Coordinator, per Source
The Green Bay Packers are hiring Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley as their new defensive coordinator, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported and Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer confirmed.
Hafley has been the head coach for Boston College since 2020, accumulating a 22-26 record in four seasons, including a 1-1 record in bowl games. He previously spent one season as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State, but spent 2013-2018 as a defensive backs coach in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers.
Hafley’s choice comes among uncertainty in college football, and according Thamel, Hafley wants to focus more on football and less on “fundraising, NIL and recruiting.”
The Packers tapped Hafley to replace Joe Barry, who was fired after three seasons as the team’s defensive coordinator. While Hafley was with the 49ers, he worked under then-defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who is close friends with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.
Hafley is the third college football head coach to leave his job for an assistant position elsewhere, joining former South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack and former Buffalo head coach Maurice Linguist.
