Andy Reid Sticks Up for Former Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy and His Coaching Future
One year after Eric Bieniemy and the Kansas City Chiefs parted ways, coach Andy Reid still has nothing but respect for his former offensive coordinator.
During Super Bowl LVIII media week, Reid said he hadn’t had a chance to talk to Bieniemy since his former OC was let go by the Washington Commanders on Tuesday, but he did offer a few powerful words of support to the beloved ex-Chiefs coach.
“I would tell you I think his coaching future is great,” Reid said on Wednesday. “I’m obviously a big fan of his, and I know the things he can do.”
Reid and Bieniemy spent five years together as a dynamic head coach—offensive coordinator duo, reaching three Super Bowls and winning two. Last offseason, Bieniemy left for a fresh start as the Commanders’ assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, but Washington's recent personnel shake-up has Bieniemy currently out of a job for the 2024 season.
Just one season removed from his Chiefs' stint, Bieniemy's roots in Kansas City still run deep. In fact, Reid revealed that Bieniemy actually talked to the Chiefs’ offense ahead of the AFC championship game against the Baltimore Ravens in January.
Patrick Mahomes confirmed that fact in his Super Bowl presser and touched upon the impact Bieniemy continues to have on the Chiefs.
“It’s always great having EB in the building. Just being there, the energy that he brings, the mentality that he brings… He loves being a part of the team and being a part of that culture,” Mahomes said. “Listening to him talk—I think guys had a little bit of chill bumps. Obviously he didn’t get that head coaching opportunity, but I’m excited for him to continue to coach football and continue to make his impact on the game.”
