Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney is not expected to play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Toney was not listed on the team’s final injury report.

The embattled wideout endured an up-and-down season during a year when he was expected to be Patrick Mahomes’s top wide receiver. Most recently, he went on a viral profanity-laced Instagram Live rant saying, “I’m not hurt, none of that. Hip, knee, nuh-uh.” That incident followed Toney’s being ruled out for the AFC championship game on Jan. 28 due to a hip injury and personal reasons, initially reported to be the birth of his child.

This led observers to conclude he was talking about the Chiefs. However, he later said his comments were taken out of context. On Monday, Toney said he was talking about his former team, the New York Giants.

“It kinda started [like] that, but in the process of that I guess it got interrupted,” Toney said of the rant. “So, it got a mixed message. I guess you could say then a lot of footage got chopped up and released. So, it made it like I was attacking the one [Chiefs] I love the most. I’d never attack the Chiefs, never say anything about the Chiefs. Who I was referring to was the Giants fans, people in my comments.

“I was referring to them, which I shouldn’t have,” he continued.

During his time with the Giants, Toney often argued with fans online, and he also said the team lied about a multitude of injuries. Despite his clarification about the social media rant and being off the injury report, though, it looks like Kansas City will be without Toney on Sunday.

Toney recorded 27 receptions for 169 yards with one touchdown catch during the regular season.
