49ers Rookie Jake Moody Makes Super Bowl History With Second-Quarter Field Goal
The San Francisco 49ers got on the scoreboard first during Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs, as rookie kicker Jake Moody gave the Niners a 3–0 lead early into the second quarter.
After a scoreless first quarter, the first in a Super Bowl since 2019, it was San Francisco’s rookie kicker who opened the scoring with an impressive display from 55 yards out.
Not only did Moody convert on his first-ever field goal attempt in the Super Bowl, but he also made history with the kick.

Moody’s successful 55-yarder was the longest field goal in Super Bowl history, breaking the record previously held by former Buffalo Bills kicker Steve Christie, who hit a 54-yarder in Super Bowl XXVIII back in 1994.
The 55-yarder was just shy of Moody’s career-long of 57 yards.
Moody endured a somewhat up-and-down rookie season, during which he converted 84% of his field goal attempts. The former Michigan kicker had made just three of his five field goal attempts during the playoffs, but stepped up in a big way with his successful attempt from 55 yards out.
