Patrick Mahomes Took a Pointed Shot at Chiefs Underdog Status After Super Bowl Win
Surprising as it might seem for a team going for its second consecutive Super Bowl championship, the Kansas City Chiefs were underdogs throughout their 2024 NFL playoff run.
Against the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round, the Chiefs were 2.5-point underdogs on the road. In the AFC championship game, the Baltimore Ravens–the AFC’s No. 1 seed with a 13–4 record–were 4.5-point favorites at home over Kansas City. And in Super Bowl LVIII, the San Francisco 49ers were favored by two points.
In each of those games, the Chiefs prevailed on their way to repeating as Super Bowl champions. When CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz reminded quarterback Patrick Mahomes of their underdog status during the Lombardi Trophy presentation, the Super Bowl MVP had a defiant, definitive response.
“Yeah, just know that the Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs,” Mahomes said. “Just know that.”

Did being underdogs provide extra motivation for the Chiefs as they pursued another Super Bowl title? Some of the players might say so.
However, Mahomes, along with his teammates and coaches have championship dynasty aspirations and seem determined to earn their place among the best teams in NFL history. The Chiefs are probably fine with being viewed by fans, media and sportsbooks as underdogs. For now, they just keep winning.
