One Dead, Multiple Wounded at Kansas City Super Bowl Parade Shooting
One person is dead and multiple wounded during a shooting near Union Station in Kansas City where large crowds gathered to celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory on Wednesday afternoon.
At least 21 people were wounded in addition to the fatality, according to Kansas City fire chief Ross Grundyson. Children were among the wounded, Kansas City police chief Stacey Graves said. She also said several people have been taken into custody. The shooting took place west of Union Station as Chiefs fans were leaving the parade route, police said.
“At the conclusion of the rally there were shots fired west of Union Station near the garage and several people were struck,” Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, told the Kansas City Star.
Minutes after Chiefs players vowed to secure a three-peat, gunfire erupted near Union Station and prompted the crowds to scatter and spectators to take cover.
Kansas City police immediately set up child reunification stations and requested that people avoid the Union Station parking garage area to allow first responders to administer treatment. Officers worked to clear Union Station, and the people inside were slowly led outside from the building.
The FBI told the Kansas City Star that it “had a presence at the parade today and is providing law enforcement assistance to the Kansas City Police Department.”
A few hours after the initial shooting, the Chiefs released a statement, thanking local law enforcement and confirming that all players and staff were safe and accounted for.
