The New England Patriots and former Washington Commanders quarterback Jacoby Brissett have agreed to a one-year, $8 million deal.

The contract is worth up to $12 million including incentives, as reported by NFL’s Tom Pelissero, and will be finalized once the new league year begins Wednesday.

Brissett, a third-round pick by New England in the 2016 NFL draft, returns to Foxborough eight years later as an established veteran. The 31-year-old journeyman suited up for the Commanders in 2023, recording 224 passing yards and three touchdowns in three games.

Brissett started two games in his rookie campaign with the Patriots. Since then, he’s racked up 46 starts for three different teams and has occasionally plugged in as a spot starter and reliable backup. Last season, he was praised for his valuable mentorship of second-year quarterback Sam Howell in Washington.

The Patriots, currently expected to take a rookie signal-caller with the No. 3 pick in April, can benefit from Brissett’s grizzled experience and leadership in 2024. After New England traded Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this week, the reunion between Brissett and New England ultimately appears to be a pragmatic one to add depth to the quarterback room.
