Seahawks GM Spills Beans on Giants’ Compelling Pitch to QB Drew Lock
Drew Lock found a new home in free agency Tuesday, opting to leave the Seattle Seahawks in favor of a one-year contract agreement with the New York Giants.
The Seahawks apparently wanted Lock back in 2024, but the Giants made a promise in their free-agent pitch that the 27-year-old quarterback couldn’t refuse.
Seattle general manager John Schneider told 710 Seattle Sports radio show Wyman and Bob on Thursday that the Giants “basically sold him on the opportunity to compete to be the starter.”
Schneider also said Lock views his opportunity with New York in 2024 similar to Baker Mayfield’s one-year prove-it deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023. Mayfield won the starting job in training camp and guided the Bucs to a surprising 9–8 record, an NFC South title and one playoff win.
Mayfield went on to sign a three-year contract worth $100 million with Tampa Bay earlier this week.
That statement also brings to light where the Giants stand with quarterback Daniel Jones, who is entering just the second year of a four-year, $160 million contract extension he signed last March.
Jones suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 9 but struggled before that, throwing for just two touchdowns and six interceptions in six starts.
In four games (two starts) for Seattle last season, Lock completed 63.2% of his passes for 543 yards, three touchdowns and three picks. He led a memorable game-winning drive in the final minute of Seattle’s 20–17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15.
It appears Jones will battle Lock and viral sensation Tommy DeVito for the Giants’ starting job in training camp.
The Seahawks will now move on from Lock and struck a trade for Washington Commanders signal-caller Sam Howell on Thursday, bringing in competition for starting quarterback Geno Smith.
